The DCEU was born from the success of Marvel's Cinematic Universe, with Warner Bros. seeking to create a comparable interconnected world of heroes. Man of Steel (2013) reimagined Superman as a mythic figure grappling with his dual identity, setting the tone for Snyder's darker vision that would dominate the early phase. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016) and Suicide Squad (2016) attempted to establish broader connections but faced criticism for their tonal inconsistency and incomplete storytelling. The franchise hit its peak with Wonder Woman (2017) and Aquaman (2018), which successfully balanced spectacle with character development while introducing mythological elements that expanded the universe's scope. Zack Snyder's Justice League (2021) served as both conclusion to his era and introduction to new creative leadership, with its four-hour runtime attempting to weave together disparate threads into a cohesive whole.
