In a distant French kingdom, a selfish prince is transformed into a fearsome beast as punishment for his cruelty and cold heart. The enchantress who cast the spell vanishes, leaving the prince to languish in his magnificent but lonely castle, surrounded by servants who have also been transformed into enchanted objects. The curse can only be broken if the Beast learns to love another and earns their love in return before the final petal falls from a magic rose, or he will remain a beast forever.
Years later, in a nearby village, lives Belle, a bright and independent young woman who dreams of adventure and excitement beyond the provincial life she leads. She lives with her inventor father Maurice, who is considered eccentric by the townsfolk. When Maurice ventures into the forest and stumbles upon the Beast's castle, he is captured and imprisoned. Belle, determined to save her father, rides into the forbidden forest and offers herself in exchange for Maurice's freedom, becoming the Beast's prisoner in the castle's west wing.
Within the castle, Belle forms unexpected bonds with the enchanted servants, including the candelabra Lumiere, the clock Cogsworth, the teacup Mrs. Potts, and the magical wardrobe Madame de la Grande Bouche. As time passes, the Beast's gruff exterior slowly softens as he and Belle discover shared experiences of loneliness and dreams. He gives Belle access to his vast library, and they share intimate moments over dinner and snow-covered evenings. Belle helps the Beast see that his inner worth transcends his monstrous appearance.
The greatest threat comes from Gaston, a vain and arrogant huntsman who seeks to marry Belle and rid the village of the Beast he considers a monster. When Belle refuses Gaston's proposal, he rallies the villagers to attack the castle, revealing the Beast as a genuine threat. In the climactic confrontation, the Beast must choose between destroying Gaston or showing mercy, ultimately being wounded by Gaston's arrow. Belle's declaration of love for the Beast shatters the curse, restoring the prince to his original form as the castle transforms into its former glory, with all enchanted servants returned to human form.
