Aethelgard
Overview
Aethelgard is a realm of fading light and resurgent shadow, where a once-great celestial empire has fractured into warring duchies. The land is perpetually dimming under the influence of the Umbral Veil, a magical eclipse that bleeds the darkness of the Void into the world, threatening to consume all.
In depth
Aethelgard was once a unified empire, its capital city of Solis shining as a beacon of order and arcane knowledge. For centuries, the empire's power was derived from the Heartstone, a massive crystal that channeled the sun's energy. However, a cataclysmic event known as the Sundering shattered the Heartstone and birthed the Umbral Veil, a permanent, magical eclipse that has been spreading across the sky for a generation. This Veil is not merely an absence of light but a sentient, creeping darkness that drains magic, erodes the land, and spawns twisted creatures known as the Nightmarish. The empire collapsed into a collection of independent duchies, each with its own desperate strategy for survival. Some, like the militaristic Duchy of Caelum, fortify their borders and wage war for the remaining pockets of true sunlight. Others, such as the merchant-princes of Umbra, have learned to adapt, building cities that thrive in the twilight and even harnessing the Veil's power, albeit at a terrible cost to their soul. At the heart of the conflict are the Aethelian Knights, an order of paladins who guard the last fragments of the Heartstone, believing they can perform the Reforging to restore the sun. They are opposed by the Shadow Court, a cabal of sorcerers and nobles who see the Veil as the inevitable future and seek to complete its conquest of the world. The fate of Aethelgard hangs in the balance, a race between the desperate hope of the light and the seductive, inevitable pull of the dark.
