What awards are given to animated films?

The Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film has been presented by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) as part of the annual Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, since the 5th Academy Awards, covering the years 1931–32 to the present. From 1932 until 1970, the category carried the name Short Subjects, Cartoons; it was renamed Short Subjects, Animated Films from 1971 to 1973, and has held its current title since the 46th Awards in 1974.

Originally, awards in the first five decades were presented to the producers of the shorts. Under current Academy rules, the award is presented to the individual person most directly responsible for the concept and the creative execution of the film, with provisions for multiple recipients if more than one individual has contributed significantly.

This award specifically recognizes excellence in the creation of animated short films, distinguishing it from other categories that honor feature-length or live‑action productions.
