Is the jazz singer based on a true story?

The Jazz Singer, released in 1927, was directed by Alan Crosland and produced by Warner Bros. The screenplay was adapted from Samson Raphaelson's 1925 play of the same name, which in turn was based on his short story "The Day of Atonement." Both the play and the short story are works of fiction. The film tells the tale of Jakie Rabinowitz, a young man who defies his devout Jewish family's traditions to pursue a career as a jazz singer.
