Does gta online require story mode progress?

Grand Theft Auto Online is presented by Rockstar North as the online multiplayer component of Grand Theft Auto V. The Wikipedia entry for the game notes that it is an independent online experience set in the same open world of San Andreas. It does not mention any prerequisite for playing the story mode of GTA V. Historically, players can create a new GTA Online character and access all online content without having completed the single‑player campaign. Therefore, story mode progress is not required to access or enjoy GTA Online.
