Grand Theft Auto Online is the online multiplayer component of Grand Theft Auto V, but it operates independently from the single‑player story. In GTA Online, players create their own customisable silent protagonist and use that character for all missions and activities. The story mode characters that appear in the single‑player campaign of GTA V are not available in the online mode. Players can, however, purchase and use the same vehicles, weapons, and properties that exist in the franchise, but the narrative characters from the story remain exclusive to the single‑player experience.
