Walt Disney, born Walter Elias Disney on December 5, 1901, in Chicago, Illinois, became one of the most prolific and beloved filmmakers in cinematic history. After serving as an ambulance driver in World War I, Disney co-founded the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio with his brother Roy in 1923, eventually transforming it into The Walt Disney Company. In 1928, Disney introduced Mickey Mouse in the groundbreaking short film Steamboat Willie, the first synchronized sound cartoon, which catapulted him to international fame.
