John Musker

John Musker began his career at Walt Disney Animation Studios in the late 1970s after studying character animation at CalArts, where he first met his future creative partner Ron Clements. The two quickly established a collaborative rhythm that would define much of Disney's most successful era, working together on story and animation for films like The Fox and the Hound and The Black Cauldron before taking the helm as co-directors with The Great Mouse Detective in 1986.

Their breakthrough came with The Little Mermaid in 1989, a film widely credited with launching the Disney Renaissance. Musker and Clements brought Broadway-style musicality and vivid character animation to the story of Ariel, and the film's success revitalized the studio and the entire animated feature industry. They followed this triumph with Aladdin in 1992, a wildly inventive adventure featuring Robin Williams' iconic vocal performance as the Genie, and Hercules in 1997, which showcased a bold, stylized visual approach inspired by classic caricature and Greek pottery art.

Beyond their Renaissance-era hits, Musker co-directed The Princess and the Frog in 2009, returning Disney animation to hand-drawn techniques while introducing Tiana, the studio's first African American princess.
