John McTiernan

Born on January 8, 1951, in Albany, New York, John McTiernan studied at the Juilliard School before earning a graduate degree in film from the California Institute of the Arts. His early career included work as a filmmaker-in-residence at the Columbia University Center for Advanced Film Studies, where he honed a deeply analytical approach to cinema that would later inform his taut, geometric action staging.
