Carlos Saldanha

Carlos Saldanha was born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where his early fascination with drawing and storytelling led him to study at the prestigious School of Visual Arts in New York. He joined Blue Sky Studios in 1993 as an animator and quickly rose through the ranks, contributing to the studio's short films and early projects. His technical skill and comedic instincts caught the attention of studio leadership, and he was eventually handed the chance to direct a feature film.

His directorial debut came with Ice Age: The Meltdown in 2006, a sequel that expanded the world of the original hit with warmer tropical settings and a larger emotional scope. Saldanha's confident handling of the ensemble cast, including Manny the mammoth, Sid the sloth, and Diego the saber-toothed tiger, helped the film become a global success. He went on to direct Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs in 2009 and Ice Age: Continental Drift in 2012, each pushing the visual ambition of the franchise while keeping its slapstick heart intact.

In 2011, Saldanha fulfilled a longtime personal dream by directing Rio, an animated musical adventure set in his hometown. The film celebrated Brazilian culture, music, and wildlife, particularly the endangered Spix's Macaw, and became one of the highest-grossing films ever produced in Brazil. He returned to direct the sequel Rio 2099, err, Rio 2 in 2014, further deepening the world of Blu and Jewel. Both films showcased his ability to weave cultural authenticity with broad family-friendly humor.

After his tenure at Blue Sky, Saldanha ventured into hybrid live-action animation with the Netflix film Blue Miracle in 2021, a true-story drama about a Mexican orphanage that saved itself through a fishing competition. The project reflected his continued interest in telling heartfelt stories rooted in real communities. He has also been involved in developing several new projects exploring Brazilian folklore and environmental themes.

Saldanha's legacy lies in his role as a bridge between American studio animation and Latin American storytelling sensibilities. He brought warmth, color, and a love of music to every project he touched, and he remains a powerful example of Latin representation in the global animation industry. His work continues to inspire a generation of young animators across Latin America and beyond.
