Trevor Phillips

Trevor Phillips was once a skilled military pilot and demolition expert who served in the Canadian Armed Forces before being dishonorably discharged. He later moved to the United States and carved out a brutal reputation as a small-time criminal in the fictional town of Ludendorff, North Yankton, before eventually settling in the desert outskirts of Los Santos, where he runs an illegal arms and drug trafficking operation from a rundown airfield trailer.

In Grand Theft Auto V, Trevor is reintroduced to his old partner-in-crime Michael Townley, who had faked his own death years earlier to escape their violent past. Discovering that Michael is alive reignites Trevor's volatile obsession with the man he considers his best friend, and he inserts himself into Michael's life with a mixture of gleeful reunion and uncontrollable jealousy over Michael's new family. The two of them, along with Michael's protégé Franklin Clinton, form the unlikely trio of protagonists whose stories interweave throughout the game.

Trevor's personality is a tornado of contradictions. He is openly homophobic, casually murderous, and prone to dismembering people with bare hands, yet he shows genuine tenderness toward his ex-girlfriend Patricia Madrazo, has a soft spot for the lost souls wandering Blaine County, and forms what might pass for paternal feelings toward Wade Hebert and Ron Jakowski. He is also a devoted animal lover, at least toward dogs, and is deeply disgusted by any harm done to them.

Created by Rockstar Games and brought to life through the motion capture and voice performance of Steven Ogg, Trevor represents the studio's most extreme exploration of a fundamentally broken human being. Ogg's manic energy, gravelly voice, and improvisational dialogue made the character an instant icon of the series, and the introduction of a switchable protagonist allowed players to inhabit Trevor's chaotic worldview directly. His story arc explores the desperate attempt of a man who has destroyed nearly everything in his life to find some form of meaning, whether through friendship, mayhem, or the paranoid conviction that he alone sees the world clearly.
