Omar Sy

Born in Trappes, France, in 1978, Omar Sy rose to fame as a comedian and radio personality before transitioning to acting. His early career was rooted in French sketch comedy, where he joined the Canal+ television team alongside friends like Fred Testot, performing as part of the popular duo Omar and Fred. Their irreverent humor and quick wit made them household names in France and laid the foundation for Sy's transition into film.

Sy achieved global stardom with the 2011 film Intouchables, directed by Olivier Nakache and Éric Toledano. In the film, he played Driss, a streetwise caretaker from the projects who forms an unlikely friendship with a wealthy quadriplegic man played by François Cluzet. The film became a cultural phenomenon, shattering box office records and earning Sy the César Award for Best Actor, making him the first Black actor to win the prestigious French honor. The performance was widely praised for its warmth, comedic timing, and emotional depth.

Expanding his international presence, Sy joined the X-Men cinematic franchise, playing the mutant Bishop in X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014) and later reprising a version of the character in X-Men: Apocalypse (2016). He also took on the lead role of Lupin, the modern reimagining of the classic French gentleman thief Arsène Lupin, in the hit Netflix series that debuted in 2021. The show became a global success, further cementing his status as a leading man capable of anchoring both prestige and mainstream projects.

Sy has continued to diversify his roles, appearing in films such as Jurassic World (2015), where he played Barry Sembène, the operations manager of the dinosaur theme park. He also starred in Chocolat (2016), a period drama about the first Black circus performer to perform in France, earning critical acclaim for portraying Rafael Padilla, known as Chocolat. More recent projects include Knock (2017), Yao (2019), and The Call of the Wild (2020), demonstrating his range across languages and genres.

Beyond acting, Sy is known for his humility, humor, and dedication to his craft. He has become one of the most recognizable French actors of his generation, bridging French and international cinema with ease.
