John Corben was once an ordinary man—a reporter desperate to save his own life after a terminal illness. When he agreed to participate in an experimental procedure to replace his failing heart with a mechanical one, he never imagined the procedure would be powered by a fragment of kryptonite. The radiation from the kryptonite gave him extraordinary powers but also made him a walking death sentence for any Kryptonian nearby, including Superman. His transformation into Metallo marked the beginning of his career as one of the most psychologically complex villains in Superman's rogues gallery.

As Metallo, John Corben has fought Superman on numerous occasions, often serving the interests of other villains or criminal organizations who recognize his value as a Superman-killer. His kryptonite heart provides him with superhuman strength and durability, and he can project kryptonite radiation as a weapon. However, his mechanical heart is also his greatest vulnerability—destroying or removing the heart typically defeats him. This weakness has been exploited many times over the years, leading to various reinventions of the character, including periods where he was revived or rebuilt with increasingly advanced technology.

In the 2006 film Superman Returns, Metallo was portrayed by the legendary Kevin Spacey, bringing a menacing gravitas to the character. In this interpretation, Corben was a scientist who worked alongside Lex Luthor, and his transformation into Metallo was the result of Luthor's machinations. The film's version of the character featured a more scientific approach to his kryptonite powers, with the heart serving as a power source that could be manipulated by outside forces.

Metallo's character represents a tragic figure trapped by his own desperation and the choices of others. He has alternately been portrayed as a villain seeking to destroy Superman out of hatred, a pawn of other villains, and occasionally as a more morally ambiguous figure who struggles with his own humanity. His enduring presence in Superman's mythos stems from the unique threat he poses and the philosophical questions his existence raises about identity, humanity, and the cost of power.
