The toy line he represents is 'Lotso Huggable,' which was an actual pull-string talking bear toy released by Hasbro in the 1990s. His signature phrase 'I'm right here, and I'm not going anywhere' reflects his original role as a protective companion.

His journey from beloved toy to antagonist begins when Andy and his family move, and Lotso is accidentally left behind. He is discovered abandoned at a gas station and becomes embittered by this perceived betrayal. When Woody and the gang later arrive at Sunnyside Daycare, Lotso has already established himself as the self-appointed leader of the Caterpillar Room toys. His rule is authoritarian and oppressive, with his minions enforcing strict curfews and punishing dissenters, particularly the newer arrivals from Bonnie's house.

Despite his villainous actions, Toy Story 3 presents Lotso with surprising nuance. He justifies his behavior by convincing himself that toys are meant to be played with and eventually discarded by children, claiming that love is fleeting and attachment leads to pain. His hatred stems from feeling replaced and forgotten, making him a tragic figure as much as a villain. The revelation that he abandoned his own former owner, a little girl named Bonnie, further cements his hypocrisy.

In the film's climax, Lotso's facade finally crumbles when he discovers a photoset on a child's toy box showing that child and their own Lotso toy, proving that love can persist beyond initial attachment. This moment of vulnerability leads him to sacrifice himself to save the toys from an incinerator, only to be abandoned again by the very toys he attempted to help. By the film's end, he is shown working as a clock-tower door greeter, having seemingly reformed but still carrying the weight of his past actions.
