Drago Bludvist

Drago Bludvist emerges as a fearsome warlord and the central antagonist of How to Train Your Dragon 2. He commands an enormous army of trappers and has spent years hunting dragons across distant lands, capturing and forcibly bending them to his will through fear and violence. His ultimate weapon is a colossal Bewilderbeast, a monstrous ice-dwelling dragon that he controls to assert dominance over other dragons, bending even free creatures into unwilling servitude.

Drago's defining physical characteristic is his complete lack of an arm, the result of a past encounter with a dragon that scarred him deeply. He wears a prosthetic iron appendage in its place, and this missing limb, combined with his weathered, imposing figure, lends him a brutal and intimidating presence. He travels aboard a massive ship called the Dragon Eye, an enormous vessel whose hull is lined with the skulls of dragons he has conquered, serving as both trophy and warning.

Drago's motivation is rooted in a desire for power and a bitter, unresolved hatred of dragons following the loss of his arm. He views dragons not as creatures capable of partnership but as beasts to be subjugated, representing the antithesis of the philosophy championed by Hiccup and the dragon riders of Berk. He believes that control through fear is the only viable relationship between the two, and he seeks to impose that philosophy on every dragon and every village he encounters.

His confrontation with Hiccup and the Berk dragon riders places him at the heart of the film's central conflict. Drago successfully leads an assault on Berk, using his enslaved Bewilderbeast to subdue the dragons of the island, including Toothless. He kills Stoick the Vast in a brutal duel, dealing Hiccup a devastating personal blow. However, his dominion is ultimately broken when the true alpha Bewilderbeast, the mother of all dragons, challenges his enslaved beast, freeing Toothless and the other dragons from his control. Drago is last seen fleeing into the frozen wastes, diminished but not destroyed, leaving him a lingering threat within the franchise's mythology.
