Alexander Joseph Luthor first appeared in the pages of DC Comics during the Golden Age of superhero comics, conceived as a ten-year-old genius who tormented Superman from the streets of Smallville. In his earliest incarnation, Luthor was a petty but prodigious criminal inventor with a shock of red hair and a manipulative streak that belied his youth. As the decades passed, his origin was revised and deepened: he became a child prodigy from Suicide Slum, son of the abusive fixer Lionel Luthor, who shaped his worldview into one of absolute self-reliance and contempt for weakness. When Superman arrived in Metropolis, Luthor viewed the alien savior not as a benefactor but as an existential threat to human agency and his own sense of supremacy.

Throughout the Silver and Bronze Ages, Luthor evolved from a colorful mad-scientist archetype into something more nuanced and dangerous. His intellect is consistently rated as among the highest in the DC cosmos, capable of out-thinking gods, aliens, and cosmic entities alike. He is a founding member of the Legion of Doom in many animated continuities, and his rivalry extends to Batman, Wonder Woman, and the entire Justice League. Luthor has also, on rare occasions, served as a reluctant ally or anti-hero, particularly during cosmic crises where the survival of reality itself is at stake.

Luthor's portrayals across media have cemented him as a cultural benchmark for the brilliant, charismatic villain. Gene Hackman brought a comedic, avuncular menace to the role in the Superman and Superman II films of the late 1970s and 1980s, while Michael Rosenbaum channeled the character's mania and wounded ego in Smallville. Kevin Spacey assumed the role for Superman Returns, painting a haunted, narcissistic figure still in love with Superman's alter ego Clark Kent.
